Music & Gender

My life has always been greatly influenced by music, which I use as a means of inspiration, comfort, and self-expression. I can't help but think about how gender and music are deeply connected as I move around the world of music. This relationship spans several areas, including the depiction of gender in song lyrics, industry dynamics, and the influence of music on gender identity and empowerment. The ability of song lyrics to sway people's notions of gender has me overwhelmed whenever I listen to music. They represent society's expectations and ideals, either upholding or opposing gender norms. I'm annoyed by the sheer number of songs throughout history that promote gender stereotypes and objectify women. The growth of musicians who utilize their music as a platform for subversion and empowerment, however, gives me hope. Songs like Beyoncé's "Flawless" and Kesha's "Praying," which address problems of self-acceptance and resiliency, have a particularly powerful emotional resonance for me. Opportunities for self-expression and acceptance have been made possible by the study of gender identity and appearance in music. I am inspired by creatives of all genders who bravely accept their identity. Artists like Sam Smith, Janelle Monáe, and Lil Nas X helped the music industry become more inclusive and varied by making music. Their bravery serves as an example for those in need as well as for people in the world, inspiring us to accept our true selves. Gender identity can be shaped and explored through music. It makes it possible for people to express who they truly are, to question societal conventions, and to feel a part of something. Punk rock, hip-hop, and electronic music have all had a significant impact on the development of communities that support gender-nonconforming, people. These genres and the musicians that use them to foster a more welcoming and inclusive society have my gratitude. I am reminded of the significant influence music has had on my life as I consider the connection between music and gender. Music can influence views, dispel myths, and provide a voice to underrepresented groups. It acts as a catalyst for societal change, empowerment, and self-expression. To support a sector that values the depth of the human experience, I am dedicated to promoting and elevating various voices as I continue to explore this intersection.

  5. Hi Malik, I am with you when it comes to appreciating artists who use their platform as a means to change harmful stereotypes and norms. Many people don't realize how influential music artists can be in shaping the way people think and act. If you talk about positive things, future generations will be inspired to do those positive things in their lives.

  6. Malik, I love what you're writing about here. Music and the arts can be hugely influential in shaping culture and the artists you mention have provided representation that has not been present before. It makes me think about artists in the past who seemed to push boundaries of gender and the artists of today now have opportunities to push those boundaries even more.
